I don't want to sound mean, but do you know what you remind me of, Pulverturm? You remind me of my schoolkids I had to and will teach! They have the same troubles speaking and writing English as you have.

Ah. Ich nehme ja schon extra freiwilligmir die Zeit, übersetze englische Sachen ins Deutsche und gebe es dem Lehrer zur Korrektur. Was er an rot anstreicht, ist nicht viel.

This is good, Pulverturm, because it helps understanding Grammar. But you should also practice speaking and writing, because that helps even more with your Grammar.

I just can support the words of Sarah. And maybe you can write in English over here again. I won't say anything about your mistakes.

By the way... How comes that when I am walking around town people who ask me about a way are always wondering that I am able and do explain it in English if they ask for? I don't get it...

Yesterday I was reading a few sentence from a book that is in english and have read it in loud voice and after it I had translated it. I had help with that from somebody, if I needed help.

That sounds great! Who helped you and what did you read?

I did my sister's homework for school during the weekend. It was really easy, but as she was ill she couldn't do it on her own.

I like the English language as well. It sounds much better than German :D

Unfortunately I have finished school now so I won´t have much possibilities to speak English in the future. But at school I haven´t spoken much anyway ;) Our teachers preferred to teach us how to analyse poems, fictional and unfictional texts so that I´m able now to tell you all about stylistic devices, the point of view and the intention of the author. But if anyone asked me to describe my last trip to London I would have some problems referring to vocabulary and phrases...

Now I can just use my knowledge to read English books (ok, that is sometimes really advantageous because some books haven´t been translated yet) and sometimes talk with my mother (she is an English teacher).

And now I can "talk" to you, too! ;)
    Bye for now!

    Hey Aura!
Actually it's a typical problem of all pupils I think that they can tell you everything about poems and so on, but they wouldn't survive in an English speaking country. Which I find really sad. It was the same situation for me when I finished school. Did you write your Abitur in English?
    take care

    @ darkangel
Yes, I did. And I got 14 points! It means that I got mark 1 !!!! I´m really proud of me but I also know that such exams that you write in a foreign language doesn´t tell you whether you are good or bad in speaking (pronunciation)... The only thing I really know is that I can talk with you about the environment (air pollution, melting polar ice caps, desertification and similar stuff) because that was my topic in my final examination. ^^

@Aura: It's good to know that these topics don't change over the years... I didn't get mark one, but two was enough ;) Pronounciation is something you can just learn by talking. Have you ever been abroad in an English speaking country? It's worth it. For experience and language.

Well, I think the topics should change. They are awfully boring :D.

@Sarah: And where did you spend it? When I'm looking at the books my pupils use, I see the same topics that I had... So, I don't think it's going to change... Just the pictures look nicer somehow.

I haven't spent it yet, I'm going in September and I'll come back in April.
I'm going to the small town of Caistor in Lincolnshire. It is near Kingston upon Hull.

Hey that's cool, that you're talking in english here. ;)

I share a flat with friends (we're five girls and one boy) and we're talking english some times here.
I think I want my child to speak both languages (german and english) so we're going to continue talking both.

Last time I spoke english in school was in 2005.. But my boyfriend and I are watching series and movies in english. Some times with subtitles and some times without.

@Sarah: You're so lucky! I wish I could something like this... Say "Hello" to England from me, will you? And please, do tell me everything about your trip later on!

@Nongi: That's great that you want your child to learn speaking both. Do you know surfthechannel.com? It's great for movies etc

Nope, never heard about it before.. But we have lots and lots of dvd's here.. I would guess there are 200 of them in our flat.. xD We have lots of movies and series..
Presently my boyfriend and I are watching "Heroes" and "Battlestar Galactica". Before that we saw "Gilmore Girls" and "Prison Break" (all seasons).
And we really love "Lost" - we are waiting for season six (final season), wich is coming in 2010. :)

Oh, an English thread, may I join you?

Unfortunately, my spoken and written English isn't as good as it should be...although I'm able to understand everything (thanks to BBC, CNN, the DVD-industry and- thanks to J.K. Rowling)

I love the English language, especially in some Irish pubs around here..and after having some beers (yeah, I know, drinking alcohol sometimes isn't the best decision , but who cares?*g) I can speak fluently- literally *g*
